PEOPLE AREN'T BUYING : THE NEW PLIGHT IN NIGERIAN FASHION



It's not longer a myth, sitting at shows that were meant to foster sales, taking in the music, enjoying a drink, mixing with people. We were all meant to shop and make the seller or hosts happy(pocket wise) by supporting and buying, but this is not the case, in the recent climate of Nigerian fashion consumption. It is as thought the phrase less is more seems to be written in everyone's mind, contemplating each purchase while balancing a drink on one hand. It is exactly the same atmosphere, perhaps only this time more walking, a market sort of setting, vendors, music and more people. This is still another shopping spree-ish event,  souk, etc planned to foster sales for new sellers, makers and entrepreneurs, but people aren't buying. They peep from outside the set up stalls, make a few comment, come in, swipe through the merchandise and then leave.

Fashion hasn't been the only one suffering in this new trend, food, accessory, & other luxury items have also been a victim. Of course the pricing seems right, adjusted for a locality and event as such. Deciphering the problem /factor that has suddenly reduced the shopping trend in Nigerian fashion seems imminent. A friend of mine once whispered into my ears "the economy seems harsh" when I was suddenly perplexed at the way shoppers and buyers alike moved through events recently. 

We concluded this; such events might have become the new hangout, where you could perhaps sample a new drink, learn a new designer name, take a few pictures, and of course head home or perhaps move to another event of such. It all seems like a weekend ritual,  or perhaps the new social schedule for the weekend, where all you needed was a taxi to move around. 

In my opinion, I'd like to believe that we are at a point of excess. An excess in what we've considered fair enough for fashion, food, and accessories alike.  Buyers look to add a relevant piece of item, to their closet or an already purchased product, waiting to be complemented with something. Relevance is the new need and affordable is a new selling point for makers, but I'd like to ask, how affordable do the customers want it ? How should the new pricing be arrived at? In an economy where production is stiff, immediately making the selling price higher than pre-planned, how do entrepreneurs approach the market, navigate sales and calculate profit to allow them grow. We are at a point of consideration, and perhaps the green gospel might as well be adopted here and now.
